Sewage Proposal UPDATED 9/20/07
20 Sep 2007

On September 19, 2007, the Pearl River County Utility Authority informed HAWL that grant funding would be available to cover the treatment costs associated with the HAWL sewage system. This grant funding would require an action plan amendment to the Gulf Regional Master Plan, which MDEQ is currently preparing.  As a gated community, we would not be entitled to receive any funding.  However, by allowing HAWL to tie into their treatment system using their infrastructure, this funding would save each property owner approximately $2,000 for the wastewater treatment plant should they elect to connect to the actual sewer system.  These monies may not be available at a future date and with our expected additional growth, this project could be mandated.  Property owners would then be responsible for 100% of the total cost of this project.

As a result of this latest development, the estimated project costs are as follows:  Every property owner would pay $2,000 per lot to have the sewer collection lines installed in the community.  If the property owner chooses to connect to the actual sewer system, then they would pay an additional $5,000 for the STEP system.  Please note, since the PRCUA has stated that these quotes are the “worst case scenario” costs, the actual cost could be lower.

Hide-A-Way Lake Board of Directors has stated that the property owners will determine by a majority poll if HAWL should proceed with investigating the possibility of installing a centralized sewer collection system.  This poll will be included in the September 2007 monthly billing statements.  The results of this poll will determine the next step HAWL will take.  Should this poll show that the majority of the community is interested in a sewer collection system, further information including final costs and financing options would be pursued and culminate in an official final decision by the property owners to accept or reject the project.  Please take this opportunity and let us know your opinion by returning your completed poll by close of business on Thursday, October 25, 2007.

 August 30, 2007

On August 25, 2007, Hide A-Way Lake held an additional sewer informational meeting with members of the Pearl River County Utility Authority, Dungan Engineering, and the Mississippi State Department of Health.  For your review is the presentation from this meeting.  Also available is a document about the proposed sewer system and a link to the website that can provide additional information (along with some case studies).

This is an evolving process.  Our next step is to conduct a poll (tentatively scheduled to be mailed with October 2007 statements) of the residents to see what the majority truly wants.  There is a possibility that the Utility Authority will be able to obtain funding for the treatment plant, which would reduce the cost of the sewage system by $2,000 per lot.  We encourage you to review the information available and to make an informed decision.  Please see below for the new breakdown of costs per lot.

Estimated Project Costs Per Lot

  • Sewer collection lines in Hide-A-Way Lake ~ $2,000 per lot

  • Wastewater treatment plant ~ $2,000 *1,2 (if connected)

  • Grinder pump or STEP system ~ $5,000 *2 (if connected)

*1 May be eligible for Grant Funding.

*2 To be paid when connection to system is made.
