HAWL Fishing Rodeo
Saturday, October 9, 2021
Dusk (October 8th) - 12:00 pm (October 9th)
The Fall Rodeo begins at dusk October 8th and ends at noon October 9th. Pick up a map of fishing habitat locations at the Lodge, HAWL website, or East Marina Pavilion (when scales are open) to locate fishing spots. Underwater structures (fish habitats) have been placed to attract bait and game fish. Four areas are located within casting distance of the dam, both marinas, and other locations. Weigh-in will be at the East Marina Pavilion by the Lodge. The scales open at 9:00 am and close promptly at noon. Awards will be presented at 12:30 pm. There will be only one weigh-in per fisherman; all fish must be caught by hook and line. There will be four fish categories (bass, bream/bluegill, crappie, and catfish) and three age groups (10 & under, 11 – 14, and 15 & older). 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place prizes for the largest total weight of fish will be awarded to each age group in each fish category. Two separate trophies open to all age groups will be awarded for Largest Single Bass and Largest Total Weight of Grass Carp. (Enter all grass carp caught regardless of size.) There is no need to register for this FREE Rodeo. Participants are encouraged to collect litter or debris while fishing to help maintain the beauty of the lake. For more information, call the Office at 601-798-1484. Attention: No skiing or tubing will be allowed on the lake during the fishing rodeo.
Catch the Largest Total Weight of Grass Carp and Win a Trophy
One way to attract grass carp to the area where you are going to fish is to chum the spot. A couple of days before the rodeo, empty a can or two of whole kernel sweet corn in the spot where you are going to fish. Then empty a can in the spot about 20 - 30 minutes before fishing. Sweet corn performs great due to the flavors and sodium added to canned corn. Some have done the same chumming with inexpensive dry dog food that has been soaked in water. Dog food may also attract catfish. Grass carp love sweet corn on a hook in addition to bread (with a little peanut butter to hold it together) or a doughball. Grass carp are bottom feeders. Use a small sharp barbed hook (#4 or #6) and fish on the bottom or under a cork near the bottom. As with most fish, bites are best later in the evening or early in the morning. Grass carp are very wary fish, so minimize your movements when you are fishing. Just sit back, relax, and enjoy the experience. In the lake, we have them up to more than 30 lbs!! They are great fighters on rod and reel. Good luck!!
